Libby also developed a detector sensitive enough to measure the amount of 14 C in a sample. The first radiocarbon studies conducted by Libby focused on a variety of organic materials whose age was known or suggested through previous research. The first dated materials included wood from Egyptian tombs, linen wrapping from one of the Dead Sea Scrolls, and heartwood from a California sequoia. Radiocarbon dating is useful for dating organic materials as old as 45,000 to 50,000 years, after which little 14 C remains in the sample.
